NCLEX Exam: Exam Pattern, Insights, and Previous Year Paper



NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is an International License exam for the Nurses in the United States of America since 1994 and Canada since 2015. The examination is to decide whether a person is ready for entry-level nursing practice. The NCLEX is done in CAT format i.e. online computer test. The candidate must be fluent in the English language. The other language in which the exam can be given in French. There are two types of NCLEX Exam: NCLE-RN is a registered nurse examination and NCLEX-PN is a practical nurse examination. Those who have an Associate Degree in Nursing (AND) or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing can take the NCLEX-RN Exam and those who have a diploma in licensed practical nursing or licensed vocational nurses can take NCLEX-RN Examination. The NCLEX exam costs around $200 in America and $360 in Canada which you’ll pay to Pearson Vue. Pearson Vue will send you ATT (Authorization to Test). Only 8 attempts per year are allowed with 45 days gap in between. Also, there are no refunds. NCLEX exam centers are available in almost 175 countries in the world.

NCLEX Exam Pattern:

NCLEX exam is conducted at Pearson Professional Centre. Each individual will have a different form of the exam. Since each question depends on how the previous question is answered, an individual can be given between 75 and 265 questions. Only 60 out of the first 75 questions on the exam will count, and the rest 15 questions will be kept for future examination. There are 3 levels.

  • Level 1- Tests candidates' knowledge and understanding

  • Level 2- Tests candidates' analysis and application

  • Level 3- Test candidates' qualitative and aptitude.
