UPPSC Exam: Exam Pattern, Insights and Details



Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission(UPPSC) exam notification is due for the month of June. The eligible candidates can apply for the posts on the official website of UPPSC. The minimum qualification is a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university/institution and the course in the graduation will depend upon the post for which the candidate is applying. The selection will be in three parts-  Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam, and Interview. The candidate needs to clear all the stages in order to be selected. The preliminary exam will have two papers. The first paper is CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) and the Second paper is General Study. On the other hand, Mains exam four papers. First, is the general study having four papers in it, Second is One Optional Subject, Third is General Hindi and Fourth is Essay. The Interview will be of 100 marks and the total number of marks will be 1600 marks (1500+100).

UPPSC Exam: Eligibility Criteria

The candidate should check the eligibility criteria for UPPSC exam before applying for the exam. The detailed eligibility for Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission Exam is as follows:

  •  Nationality / Citizenship: The candidate must be an Indian Citizen.

  •  Age of the candidate:

  • Minimum Age: 21 years

  • Maximum Age: 40 years

  • Age Relaxation: 

    • ​OBC: 5 years - Maximum Age - 43 years

    • SC: 5 years - Maximum Age - 45 years

    • ST: 5 years - Maximum Age - 45 years

    • PwD: 15 years - Maximum Age - 55 years

  • Educational Qualification:

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university/institution and the course in the graduation will depend upon the post for which the candidate is applying.

UPPSC Exam: Exam Pattern

  • PRELIMS Exam: The exam for Prelims paper of UPPSC Exam will have two papers: General Studies-I and General Studies-II (Aptitude) Test.

  • Total marks: 400 marks

  • The exam is divided into two papers.

  • Total duration: 120 minutes for each paper, total 4 hours for Prelims paper

  • The medium of language of the questions will be Hindi and English

  • Papers: Two

  • General Studies-I for 200 marks

  • General Studies-II for 200 marks

  • ​​Marking scheme: 0.33 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer and 2.5 marks will be allotted for each right. If a question is left blank, i.e. no answer is marked by the candidate; there will be no penalty for that question.

  • MAINS EXAM:

  • Mains online test will be of 1500 marks.

  • The exam will have SIX papers along with two optional papers.

  • The medium of language of the questions will be Hindi and English.

  • Papers: Six

    • General Study having 4 paper in it for 800 marks

    • One Optional Subject for 400 marks

    • General Hindi for 150 marks

    • Essay for 150 marks

  • INTERVIEW:

​The candidate after clearing prelims and mains examination will have to appear for the interview test. The interview has no pattern, the candidate is required to carry the academic records and experience letters for the required job post.

  • The Interview will be of 100 marks.

  • The candidates should have good communication skills and should have good knowledge about the post, for which, he/she has applied.

  • The total marks of the Exam will be 1600 (Mains + Interview)

UPPSC Exam: Syllabus

  •  PRELIMS EXAM:

The Prelims Paper will be divided into two papers: General Studies I and General Studies II. First Paper will comprise of 150 questions for 200 marks and second paper will comprise of 100 questions for 200 marks. The duration of the exam is 2 hours for each paper.

  • General Studies-I:

  • Current Events

  • History of India

  • Indian and world geography

  • General issues on environmental ecology, biodiversity, and climatic change.

  • General science

  • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights issues, etc.

  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development Poverty Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.

  • General Studies-II (APTITUDE):

  • ​Comprehension

  • Interpersonal skills, including communication skills

  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability

  • Decision making and problem-solving.

  • General mental ability

  • Elementary Mathematics up to Class X level- Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics

  • General English up to Class X level

  • General Hindi up to Class X level

  • OPTIONAL SUBJECT- Any one optional subject could be chosen.

Candidates can choose from the following-

  • Group A: Social Work, Anthropology, Sociology

  • Group B: Mathematics, Statistics

  • Group C: Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Veterinary Science

  • Group D: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Agriculture Engineering

  • Group E: English Literature, Hindi Literature, Urdu Literature, Arabic Literature, Persian Literature, Sanskrit Literature

  • Group F: Political Science and International Relations, Public Administration

  • Group G: Management, Public Administration

  • ESSAY- The topics will be based on:

  • Section A: Literature and Culture, Social sphere, Political sphere

  • Section B: Science, Environment, and Technology, Economic Sphere, Agriculture, Industry, and Trade.

  • Section C: National and International Events, Natural Calamities, Landslide, Earthquake, Deluge, Drought, etc, National Development programmes, and projects.

  • General HINDI- Question-answer from Unseen passage, Abstraction, Government and Semi-government letter, telegram, official orders, notification, circular writing, Knowledge of words and uses, Uses of Prefix and Suffix, Antonyms, One-word substitution, Spelling and Sentence correction, Idioms and Phrases.

Preparation tips for UPPSC: For Prelims/Mains Exam

  • You need to finish three sections of UPPSC Prelims within 120 minutes, which means you need speed with accuracy in order to attempt 200 questions in total. The more you practice, the better chances you have of acing this exam.

  • Make aptitude your strong subjects, practice questions to solve them within time to increase efficiency. You should lay emphasis not on mugging up the formulas but instead try understanding the concepts, so, you can modify the formulas according to the question requirement.

  • Remember negative marking is a factor here. Therefore, try not to attempt questions that put you in doubt. Although the prelim exam will be of just qualifying nature and won’t be considered for the final merit list as only Main exam marks will matter, you still need to secure the minimum qualifying marks in the prelims as set by the UPPSC.

  • Lay emphasis on General Awareness more and theoretical parts of the paper.

  • Manage your time properly; give an appropriate amount of time to each section. Try to improve your time by practicing as many online tests as possible.
