pH of mouth decreases than 5.5,due to eating food, various bacteria present in our mouth acts on it and our mouth becomes acidic. When these acids like lactic acid acts with our tooth enamel made up of calcium phosphate gets corroded due to which tooth decay starts. Hence, we can say that tooth enamel start decaying when pH is lower than 5.5.

pH of of moths is lower than 5.5, which means condition of mouth is acidic. Mouth becomes acidic when bacteria present in the mouth acts on the sugary food particles. Acids formed act on the calcium salt(tooth enamel is made up of calcium salts)which in turn form dentine forming cavities over a short period of time.

Tooth decay starts when the pH of the mouth is lower than 5.5. ... It does not dissolve in water, but is corroded when the pH in the mouth is below 5.5. Bacteria present in the mouth produce acids by degradation of sugar and food particles remaining in the mouth after eating..

When the pH of our mouth is lower than pH range 5.5 then our mouth became a little much acidic and then at that condition bacteria started action sugary food particles to decompose it. By this tooth decay starts boz action of bacteria and acid formed causes cavities in our tooth enamel.
