Australian Citizenship Test, Pattern and Insights



The Australian Citizenship Test is mandatory for all those who wish to apply for the Australian citizenship. The basic requirement to be eligible for the Australian Citizenship Test is that an applicant should be over the age of 18 years and the applicant must also be a permanent resident of Australia. Australian Citizenship Test is organized and administered by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) which falls under the Department of Home Affairs, Government of Australia. The Australian citizenship test was introduced in the year 2007 to deal with matters that concerned immigration to Australia and citizenship for Australia. DIAC maintains an official website that lays out detailed information regarding how to become an Australian citizen. The application for Australian citizenship is to be filled through the DIAC official website only. The applicants can fill the online application form after meeting all the eligibility criteria prescribed by DIAC and after understanding the “filling out the application” process that includes forms, instructions, documents to be attached, information about fee payment, addresses with postal codes, etc. Applicants can take the Australian Citizenship Test in one language only, that is, English. Australian Citizenship Test is actually a computer-based test with multiple-choice questions, an applicant will have to choose the correct answer out of three given choices for each question. The duration of the test is 45 minutes with 20 choice-based questions. A candidate has to score at least 75% marks to pass the test by answering 15 questions correctly out of 20. The test will comprise of topics like history of Australia, Politics, Geography, rights and responsibilities of an Australian citizen, etc. The result of the test is announced on the computer screen just after the test is over. In case an applicant fails the Australian Citizenship Test, the test can be retaken later on the same day. Upon passing the test, the results of the test are attached to the citizenship application file and after some time the final result is declared after processing the citizenship application. However, DIAC will be introducing the new rules (subject to the passage of legislation) regarding the eligibility criteria for the Australian Citizenship Test from July 1st, 2018. To Prepare well, candidates are advised to attempt Australian Citizenship Exam previous year question papers.

•             citizens': rights, freedoms, responsibilities,

•             democracy

•             society and ways to take part

•             physical and political geography

•             social and cultural history and symbols

•             political and military history, including the: monarchy, political system, branches of government

 

After the Australian Citizenship Test

DIAC will inform the results of the computer-based test to the applicant right after the test is completed. If the applicant passes the test, then he/she will be called for the final ceremony to take the Oath of Citizenship and the applicant will be awarded the Canadian citizenship certificate.

However, in case an applicant fails the Australian Citizenship Test; under the new rule, after failing the Australian citizenship test three times in a row, an applicant will have to wait for a minimum of 2 years before he/she could take the test again. Earlier, candidates could take as many attempts as possible to pass the Australian citizenship test. The new rule also suggests that if any of the applicant is found guilty of cheating the test, he/she will be denied the citizenship for Australia.
