The purpose of both CSIR NET & UGC NET Exam is to determine the eligibility for college/university level lectureship and for the award of JRF to Indians.

Conducting BodyCSIR NET Exam is conducted by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
UGC NET Exam is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). Earlier it used to be conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
Exam SubjectsThe CSIR NET Exam is conducted only for 5 Science Subjects-
Chemical Science
Life Science
Earth Science
Physical Science
Mathematical Science
UGC NET Exam is conducted for 84 subjects other than the aforementioned Science stream subjects.
Exam PatternCSIR NET Exam consists of one paper divided into 3 parts- A, B and C. Marking scheme varies depending upon the choice of subject. There is a negative marking of 25% marks for every wrong answer. The duration of the exam is 3 hours and full marks is 200. It is conducted offline.
UGC NET consists of 2 papers- General Paper 1 which is compulsory for all candidates and a subject specific Paper 2. All questions are compulsory and there is no negative marking anywhere. Paper 1 is of 100 marks and Paper 2 is of 200 marks. The total time given to solve both papers is 3 hours. It is conducted online.
