All India Law Entrance Test Exam Pattern, Insights & Previous Year Papers



All India Law Entrance Test or the AILET is organized and controlled by National Law University Delhi (NLU-D). AILET 2020 has been scheduled for May 3, 2020. This examination is a medium for taking admissions to various integrated UG and PG law degree courses. AILET will be held in online mode across various examination centres in India. Being of the most popular law exams in India, AILET offers admission to 83 BA LLB and 20 LLM courses. The conducting body has released the notification and online applications have started on the official NLUD website from January 15, 2020. 



The application is to be filled in online mode only as instructed by the authorities. Admission to B.A.LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M. and Ph.D. Programmes will be through AILET to be conducted at Amritsar, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Cuttack,  Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad,  Jaipur, Jammu, Jodhpur,  Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, and Varanasi  on May 5 (Sunday).  Number of seats for B.A.LL.B. (Hons.)- Five-Year Programme- The University admits 80students every year to the B.A.LL.B. (Hons.), 10 seats are set aside for Foreign Nationals, Of the remaining seats (70), 15% are reserved for Scheduled Castes, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe, 5% for Persons with Disabilities. Apart from above 3 seats are supernumerary as follows- 1 seat is reserved for migrants from Kashmir, 2 seats are reserved for residents of Jammu and Kashmir. LL.M.-One-Year Programme :35+5 Seats for Foreign Nationals. AILET Exam Pattern

The AILET exam for BA LLB (Hons) course comprises of 150 questions which aspirants need to complete in duration of 1 hour 30 minutes. AILET exam pattern is such that the test paper is divided into five sections which are English, Basic Mathematics, General Knowledge, Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning.

  • Maximum marks which one can secure in AILET are 150.
  • English including Comprehension will have 35 questions for 35 marks.
  • General Knowledge will have 35 questions for 35 marks.
  • Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability) will have 10 questions for 10 marks.
  • Legal Aptitude will have 35 questions for 35 marks.
  • Logical Reasoning will have 35 questions for 35 marks.

AILET Marking Scheme

For every correct answer marked in the exam, one mark would be awarded to candidates. There will be negative marking in AILET 2019. The criteria for negative marking will be based on the formula 0.25X4=1 that means per wrong answer 0.25 Marks will be deducted. Therefore, four wrong answers will lead to deduction of 1 Mark

AILET Cut Off

Candidates need to meet AILET cutoffs to secure admission in BA LLB (Hons), LLM and PhD programmes in law offered at National Law University (NLU), Delhi. When AILET results are declared, NLU Delhi releases separate merit lists informing about the name and other details of candidates selected for admission. NLU Delhi's first merit list is released marks-wise, roll number-wise and category-wise (General, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Person with Disabilities and Kashmiri Migrants).

AILET cutoff comprises of minimum marks that aspirants need to achieve in order to secure admission in law programmes offered at NLU Delhi. The law school releases separate cutoffs for law programmes for different category of students such as – General, OBC, SC, ST, PwD and Kashmiri Migrants.

AILET Counselling

AILET counselling is conducted by NLU Delhi after result for the national level law entrance exam is declared. AILET counselling is conducted only in the offline mode at the campus of NLU Delhi. The counselling process for All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) is conducted on the basis of the merit list released for the law entrance exam.

Once AILET result is announced, candidates who make it to the merit list receive admission letters from National Law University, New Delhi. Aspirants who receive these admission letters need to report to NLU Delhi as per the scheduled time and date mentioned in their AILET admission letter. 

AILET Spot Counselling Round

National Law University, Delhi conducts a spot counselling round if seats remain vacant in any course offered at NLU Delhi after the last date to deposit fee basis the merit list for AILET exam is over. Candidates are informed that AILET spot counselling round is conducted only to fill vacant seats.

Once the counselling rounds (basis merit lists) of AILET exam are over, NLU Delhi conducts Spot Counselling round in which only those candidates can participate whose names are present in AILET merit list 2019 waiting list category. After AILET Spot Counselling round is over no further admission/counselling rounds are conducted by NLU Delhi.

Preparation tips for AILET 
 

  • You need speed to finish AILET within the prescribed time limit. Go through the topics in the AILET information brochure and start with the ones that you are good at. Practise reasoning and mathematics problems by memorising formulas.
  • After each study session keeps 1 hour for revision of topics learned/practiced.
  • Make mathematics your strong suit, practice questions to solve them within time to increase efficiency. The trick here is to mug up math formulas by heart, so they come in handy while solving a problem.
  • Become smart by attempting questions that you are sure of first, then come to the questions you’re in doubt. But don’t attempt them anyway, remember negative marking is a factor here. Therefore, only attempt a question if you really know the answer to.
  • Manage your time properly; give an appropriate amount of time to each section. Try to improve your time by practicing as many online tests as possible.
