A continuously growing horizontal underground stem which puts out lateral shoots and adventitious roots at intervals. Rhizomes are also called creeping rootstalks and rootstocks. Rhizomes develop from axillary buds and grow horizontally. The rhizome also retains the ability to allow new shoots to grow upwards. The plant uses the rhizome to store starches, proteins, and other nutrients. These nutrients become useful for the plant when new shoots must be formed or when the plant dies back for the winter. This is a process known as vegetative reproduction and is used by farmers and gardeners to propagate certain plants.

A rhizome refers to the modified stem of a plant that tends to grow horizontally instead of vertically. Rhizomes grow under the soil and new growth may occasionally sprout at different angles. Because it is found under the ground, a common misconception is that the rhizome is part of the root. However, it is actually a stem that grows beneath the surface of the ground.br /Rhizomes play a crucial role in propagation and reproduction because they have the capacity to invade the space next to the parent plant, consequently encouraging the appearance of fresh new shoots.
